Bigger than the virus

At this point the world is in mad quest to fight against the spread of the Corona Virus . So much emphasis is being placed on safety precautions and prevention methods. The world is apparently turning a deaf ear to something bigger than the virus; something that is actually contributing to the spread of COVID-19 and that is social stigma. You are probably thinking, "What does social stigma have to do with the spread of a global pandemic?" Well, everything.

A few days ago a friend of mine called to tell me he was not feeling well and he strongly charged me to keep it a secret. Initially I thought paranoia was getting the best of him until I put myself in his shoes. His greatest fear was being judged by the rest of his peers. Ever been the judgy friend? I have. Realising the lack of acceptance and stigma that came along with contracting the virus, my heart sank as it actually became vivid to me that we are helping this virus in doing harm. How do you fight the pandemic with one hand and have the other spread it? I believe noone has written an application letter to get the virus and hence there is absolutely no point in criminalizing or dehumanizing the poor victims. Why? You could be next in line.

Why covid 19 is causing so much stigma

1. The disease is new and uncommon

2. Fear of the unknown.

3. There a tendency of associating the disease with others of the past.

The impact of social stigmatisation associated with disease

1. Victims tend to hide the truth and thus they do not get medical attention in time.

2. Some victims are deprived of the necessary love and care even from family and friends.

3. Stigmatised individuals may have to deal with depression, anxiety and public embarrassment.

How to address social stigma

1. Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of those seeking healthcare.

2. Only share information that is proven to be accurate.

3. Avoid negative talk and refrain from using words that induce fear.

4. Share sympathetic narratives or stories that humanize the experiences and struggles of individuals.

5. Challenge myths and stereotypes.

6. Frequently check on and talk to your problems who are in this battle.

Martin Luther Jr said darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Similarly, hate cannot drive out fear; only love can. Let's fight together. We will get through this.
