Short Story: Sorry

The young man sat at one of the waiting chairs, he was feeling a bit queasy. His elbows digging deep in his thighs and his face buried in his hands. How relieved the mother became when he reassured her that her daughter would be fine. Now he has to go and tear her world apart... Cruel world. Only if he had the right words to console her, to ease her pain but nothing came to mind.

He got up, staggered a bit and began his walk to the mother. Just around the corner, he tried to put on a neutral face to cover his pain. At the sight of the middle aged man, she jumped to her feet and wiped the tears that had stained her face. The doctor had helped her when she came with her daughter who had just collapsed at home. She had been in the hospital long enough she had lost track of time. She just wants to see her daughter. "she's going to be fine Mrs Jones" the words of the doctor echoed in her head.

As he got closer the doctor could see by her puffy eyes that she had been here all night and she cried a lot. Damn it! he wished he had different news... Better news.

"Where's my daughter? Can I go see her now? Is she fine?..." The mother charged at the doctor. Seeing the mother in that state completely broke him. He quickly cut in before the mother said anything else, "I'm sorry Mrs Jones, we did everything we could but the clot in your daughter's heart could not be removed in time. Unfortunately...." Everything else that followed she didn't hear it. Her head felt light and her knees weak. "You're sorry? You're sorry!?" she screamed. She said throwing light punches at the doctor's chest. "You said she was going to be fine but now you're sorry," she said in sobs. The doctor took her in his arms, "I'm sorry" he kept saying.
