The problem with good ideas

It's been long since I last wrote anything here and the past weeks have given me so much time to think about life in general.

Just to clear up our field; I am not writing this as some life expert or something along those lines but this is merely an outpouring of my experiences and observations.

So, I am a medical student somewhere in between her first and second year. I remember so well the days just before our very first exam; i personally studied like a mad man. Late nights, early mornings and all that stuff people do when they have crucial exams. Unfortunately we got some pretty interesting marks which forced us to go back to the drawing board. We inquired from those who came before us and different people had different approaches to this school thing.

One person would tell you that writing notes is a waste of time and the next would tell you to write notes. Another would pin-point that focusing on theory does it while the next would magnify the importance of videos over everything. Others would tell you to pull all nighters while the others emphasized the importance of quality sleep. At the end of the day we were a bunch of headless chickens jumping from one strategy to the next with very little progress up until one of my friends came forward and said ,"Guys, Medicine haina formula"which basically means Medical school has no formula.

I have to admit that is one of the wisest things I have heard so far because to me it goes way beyond exam preparation to life at large. You see; what works for Natasha may not necessarily work for you. It's funny how one person can study for a week and fail an exam while another studies for only a day and passes the same exam. That is just the unfairness and the reality of life. Each one of us has a unique way of grasping and articulating various apects of life.

Most of our problems arise from trying so hard to imitate how others go about their lives. Someone I don't know once said, "Life is like an examination and most people fail because they copy without realising that each one of us is given a unique question paper." Again I have to reiterate; what works for person X may not necessarily work for person Y. It all comes down to self discovery and mastery. You have to find out what works for you and do just that. Stop trying to force yourself into someone's way of doing things at the expense of your own efficiency. It's so easy to get stuck up in trying to figure out a formula for life but hey;

NEWSFLASH: The formula of life is non existent.

I will try and create a visual picture of this;

Richard Branson dropped out of high school at the age of fifteen but now stands as the founder of the Virgin Group which is an international powerhouse currently worth about $4.9 billion, according to Forbes and yet there are highly educated people who cannot afford to get airtime. At the same time again there are school dropouts who have turned into street fathers and mothers who can barely afford a meal while some who excelled academically are now living their best lives. The point here is that school is not a prerequisite for success in as much as it pays off for others and the same applies to everything to our lives.

This is also the case with those motivational quotes and speeches we get all the time. I have nothing against them; to be honest I am actually a fan but i keep emphasizing the importance of keeping it real. Whatever you hear or read still has to come down to the context and reality of your life. It's ok to get ideas from outside but you still have to have your own ideas, principles and concepts that were especially designed for your convenience by you. Good ideas may not necessarily be the cherry on top of your ice cream which is why you gotta do you.

The best I can tell you to do is to take time to study yourself and work out what is going to work for you in whatever aspect of life.

I cannot give you a "y = mx + c" typa formula for life but I do hope I have opened up your mind to the bigger idea which is self mastery.

Thanks so much for reading. Please remember to subscribe and share.
